Fantastic vacation for those who want to fish and those who don't want to fish - Our family (two adults and two 12 year old b/g twins) spent a week at the Lodge at Whale Pass during July 2024 and everyone had an absolutely fantastic time.... read more The staff at the Lodge was wonderful. They made sure everyone had a good time. Chef Sarah is amazing. The food was terrific and she accommodated all of my son's many food restrictions (he loved the food).
The Lodge is especially good if, like us, you want to do more than just fish. They have great fishing available for those who want to fish all day. At the same time, for people like us who don't want to fish all day, there are so many terrific activities:
- Glacier viewing - both from a boat and from a plane (definitely do the flyover of the glacier).
- Wildlife watching - we saw a lot of wild life - otters, seals, sea lions, whales, bears, bald eagles. Definitely go to the bear preserve. The park service has built a blind where you can watch bears in the wild from very close up.
- Hiking on the island - The island itself is beautiful. Don't miss the high tide path.
- Foraging for salmon berries and goose berries - salmon berries and goose berries grow wild on the island.
- Mountain biking - they have bikes you can borrow to explore the island on road or off road
- Petroglyphs - There are some really interesting petroglyphs in the area.
- Fishing for half a day - we did some lake fishing, river fishing, and some deep sea fishing. None of us had fished before. The staff showed us what to do and we enjoyed the experience.
- Walking along the beach at low tide - There are so many star fish, crabs, and other things to see when the tide is low.
- Enjoying the Lodge itself - they have a game room, steam sauna, Jacuzzi, lovely porch
- Get a massage - Morgan the masseuse was wonderful.
There were so many great unexpected moments. One day after we had gone fishing, there was a huge sea lion who hung out by the dock eating the remains of our catch (the staff filleted the fish we caught and dumped the remains of the fish into the water off of the dock). The sea lion was so focused on his meal that he paid no attention to us standing on the dock watching and taking photos only a few feet away.
Several evenings after dinner, my husband and I relaxed in the steam sauna followed by a soak in the Jacuzzi with a glass of wine. The Jacuzzi has a great view of the dock and the water. It is a great place to see the sun set. Our kids were busy enjoying themselves in the game room so everyone was happy.
I cannot recommend the Lodge highly enough. If you have ever wanted to visit Alaska, especially, south east Alaska, this is the place to stay.Anne V

rustic elegance - If you are looking for an upscale, customized, Alaskan fishing trip, look no further than this gem of a resort. Kevin and Lyn have put together an incredible team... read more of people there to take care of your every need. We were there to have a fishing experience and that is exactly what we got. We were set up every day with a captain and mate who had us catching fish all day. At the resort, there is a separate area with movies, a pool table and other entertainment for both families and adventurers alike. The rooms were very comfortable, everything you need is there. They have a wonderful certified masseuse on staff and I was lucky enough to enjoy a massage every evening after a long day of fishing. The culinary program is fantastic with a chef that cooks five star meals each day. This was a trip to remember and I cannot wait to go back. I highly recommend this resort.

Wonderful time at The Lodge at Whale Pass - My 11 year old son and I had a wonderful time at The Lodge at Whale Pass. Kevin & Lyn were extremely gracious hosts and their entire staff provided... read more exceptional service. The Lodge has all the amenities you could want, including comfortable bedrooms with private baths, a common great room with fireplace, a hot tub and spa, and a separate recreation room that my son loved with a pool table, darts, chess, ping pong, shuffleboard, foosball and air hockey. The numerous activities available at the Lodge (fishing, wildlife viewing, kayaking, biking, hiking, glacier sightseeing) exceeded the time we had during our stay. The wildlife viewing was incredible as we saw whales, porpoises, otters, seals, sea lions, eagles, deer and a bear. We enjoyed planning our next days adventures after dinner with Kevin who was more than happy to accommodate our desires. I was glad I decided to take a break from fishing and went on the glacier tour which shouldn’t be missed. I’ve visited other fishing specific lodges, but would not bring my son or wife to them as they catered exclusively to hard core fishermen who just wanted to fish from sun up to sun down. I’m happy to say my son had as much fun as I did at the Lodge and didn’t want to leave. If you’re one of those hard core fisherman, but also enjoy nicer accommodations, food and service, you’ll appreciate the Lodge too. The fishing was superb. Captains Lucas and Brian were both professional and productive and it was a joy to be on the boat with them as they still have their passion for fishing. There were lots of high fives on board as we limited on king salmon and halibut. We flew back home with a substantial amount of fish. I had high expectations for our meals at the Lodge and chef Sarah exceeded them with delicious cuisine including fresh Alaskan seafood, original soups & creative desserts. I would highly recommend The Lodge at Whale Pass to anyone interested in an amazing Alaskan adventure with your family and friends.

Exceptional experience - Best experience ever. Staff was exceptional in crafting daily experiences that were spectacular. They actively worked around weather and other variables to get the most out of each day. Float... read more planes over glaciers, bear watching, ocean fishing while whales breached alongside the boat - beyond any expectations. Our guides were locals who were deeply knowledgeable and part of the Alaskan environment. The chef was incredible and prepared the fish we brought in hours before with simplicity and skill. The lodge was comfortable and homey.

Week filled with adventure and plenty of down time - Lyn, Kevin and all of the staff were ever-present to make our experience in Alaska as exciting and relaxing as we wanted it. The boat captains and first mates... read more were a joy to be around. Did we catch our limit every time, no, but the boat captains did their best to make sure if we had a down day to fill it with whale and Orca watching. The food - fantastic. Hanging out in the common area around the open bar with other guests really made the evenings fun. I recommend a mountain bike long ride around Neck Lake, and a short visit to the El Cap Cave Interpretive Site.

Amazing - Kevin and staff make this place absolutely wonderful. From the minute we arrived we had activities planned for us and after 30 minutes in the first boat ride we had... read more caught our first halibut! Peter the chef is a fantastic host and an even better chef.

Be in the wilderness but pampered at the same time - This lodge has everything. If you want to hike, fish, caving, kayaking or just stare at the water. Gourmet meals every night and they honor special requests. ... read more Great time for bringing family closer. Only one thing I would like to change - ladies be prepared for very rural bathroom facilities on the boats. The game room was great for all ages.
